Odd Beholder erweitert den Rahmen ihres aktuellem Konzeptalbums "Honest Work" um sechs weitere Stücke und veröffentlicht im Herbst die EP "Funny Business". "Thank You For Shopping With Us" erscheint als heute als erste Single davon!
Das drängende Indietronica-Stück erzählt von Orientierungslosigkeit in der Konsumgesellschaft. Aus der Perspektive einer*s Angestellten eines Supermarktes zeigt es die unterschiedlichen Rollen, die diese Person einnehmen muss. Von der Türsteher*in über die Sozialarbeiter*in, schließlich natürlich bis hin zur Verkäufer*in.
Weinmann führt dazu aus: "Wenn öffentliche Räume schrumpfen, oder wenn Pandemien Versammlungen verunmöglichen, wenn alte Menschen vor der Klimaerhitzung in die klimatisierten Malls fliehen, ist ausgerechnet der Supermarkt ein Zufluchtsort, in dem scheinbar alles gleichbleibt."
Das Stück ist inspiriert vom Gedicht "A Supermarket in California" von Alan Ginsberg. "Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my Angel?" In den Regalen liegt die ganze Welt aus. Und alle Jahreszeiten auf einmal: neben den Erdbeeren die Kürbisse.
Weinmann ergänzt: "Ich stellte mir vor, wie ein verrückter Prophet à la Moon Dog durch die Regale irrt und vom Verkaufspersonal angesprochen wird, scheinbar freundlich, diensteifrig, unterwürfig, aber eigentlich kontrollierend, ausschliessend, die Risiken abwägend. Bald wird der Sicherheitsdienst gerufen: die Alten, Verrückten, die Wohnungslosen, die Kranken werden aus dem Neon-Paradies geworfen. Alles ist käuflich, auch alle Leute hier sind Waren. Draussen ist nur noch Sommer und Abfall. Drinnen gibt es Eis und Plastikbesteck."

This driving Indietronica track explores a sense of disorientation in consumer society. Told from the perspective of a supermarket employee, it highlights the various roles this person is forced to take on – from bouncer to social worker, and, of course, ultimately, sales assistant.
Weinmann explains: "When public spaces shrink, or when pandemics make gatherings impossible, when older people flee the heatwave to air-conditioned shopping centres, it is the supermarket, of all places, that becomes a refuge where everything seems to stay the same."
The track is inspired by Alan Ginsberg’s poem "A Supermarket in California". "Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my Angel?" The whole world is laid out on the shelves. And all the seasons at once: the pumpkins alongside the strawberries.
Weinmann continues: "I imagined a mad prophet, à la Moon Dog, wandering aimlessly through the aisles and being approached by the sales staff – seemingly friendly, eager to help, subservient, but in reality controlling, exclusionary, weighing up the risks. Soon the security guards are called: the elderly, the mad, the homeless and the sick are thrown out of this neon paradise. Everything is for sale; even all the people here are commodities. Outside, there’s nothing but summer and rubbish. Inside, there’s ice cream and plastic cutlery."
